Unit Converter

Convert common length measurements instantly.

Fast, free and designed to work beautifully on any device.

Use this free unit converter to convert common length measurements quickly and accurately. Enter a value, choose the unit you are starting with, then select the unit you want to convert to.

Whether you are measuring a room, planning a project, following an international size guide, travelling, or comparing metric and imperial measurements, this calculator gives you a clear conversion in seconds.

How to use the Unit Converter

  1. Enter the length you want to convert.
  2. Select the unit you are converting from.
  3. Select the unit you want to convert to.
  4. View the converted result instantly.

For example, enter 2.5 metres, choose metres as the starting unit, and feet as the unit to convert to.

Unit conversion example

Suppose you need to convert 2.5 metres to feet.

One metre equals approximately 3.28084 feet.

2.5 x 3.28084 = 8.2021 feet

So, 2.5 metres is approximately 8.2 feet.

If you need a practical feet-and-inches estimate, 8.2 feet is about 8 feet 2 inches.

Common length conversions

This converter can help with common metric and imperial length measurements, including:

Metric units are commonly used in many countries for everyday measurement, construction, science, travel distances, and product specifications. Imperial units are still common in areas such as home improvement, property measurements, road distances, and personal height.

How length conversion works

A unit conversion changes the way a measurement is expressed. It does not change the actual length.

For example, one metre, 100 centimetres, and approximately 39.37 inches all describe the same distance.

The calculator first converts the entered value into a standard base measurement, then converts it into your selected unit. This helps provide consistent results when converting between metric and imperial systems.

Useful unit conversion examples

Centimetres to inches

A screen, item, or person may be measured in centimetres while a product guide uses inches.

For example:

170 cm is approximately 66.93 inches.

Kilometres to miles

Kilometres are commonly used for travel distances, while miles are used in some countries.

For example:

10 km is approximately 6.21 miles.

Feet to metres

Room dimensions, building plans, and product specifications often use feet.

For example:

12 feet is approximately 3.66 metres.

When accurate rounding matters

For everyday use, a rounded result is usually enough. For example, a room measurement might be shown as 3.7 metres instead of 3.6576 metres.

For construction, engineering, manufacturing, medical, legal, or scientific use, follow the measurement precision required by the project, plan, product, or local standard. A small rounding difference can matter in some situations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert weight, temperature, or volume with this tool?

No this converter handles length units only, from millimetres to miles. Weight, temperature, volume, and
area each use different conversion factors, so a length tool can’t do them accurately. If you’re converting
height for a health calculation, do that here first, then head to the BMI Calculator.

How do I convert a combined measurement like 5 feet 7 inches?

Convert each part separately and add the results: 5 feet → 152.4 cm, 7 inches → 17.78 cm, for a total of about
170.2 cm. The page’s centimetres-to-inches example works the same way in reverse. Just make sure both parts
are converted before you add them together.

Is the conversion exact or approximate?

The underlying factors are exact one inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres so the math itself is
precise. What you see as “approximately” is just rounding for readability: 2.5 metres is 8.2021 feet, shown
as 8.2 feet. The rounded figure is fine for everyday use; for technical work, keep more decimal places.

Why does another converter give me a slightly different answer?

Almost always rounding: one tool shows two decimals, another shows four. Occasionally a tool uses a rounded
factor (3.28 instead of 3.28084 feet per metre), which introduces small errors that grow with large values.
If two results differ beyond the last displayed digit, check which conversion factor each tool uses.

What’s the difference between a metre and a meter?

Nothing they’re the same unit. “Metre” is the spelling used in most of the world; “meter” is the American
spelling. The converter treats them identically, so use whichever label matches your document and convert
with confidence.

Does the converter work offline or store my values?

It needs an internet connection to load the page, but every conversion runs entirely in your browser your
values are never sent to a server, stored, or tied to an account. There are no sign-ups. Refresh the page
and your entries are gone.

Important notes

Make sure you choose the correct starting unit before converting. Entering a value in centimetres when it is actually in metres can change the result by a factor of 100.

This tool converts length units only. It does not measure an object, confirm a building dimension, replace a technical drawing, or account for material tolerances.

For health-related height input, you can use this converter before trying the BMI Calculator. For percentage comparisons after converting measurements, use the Percentage Calculator.
