Income Tax Calculator (USA)

Estimate your 2026 federal income tax, effective rate and take-home pay using the official IRS tax brackets.

Free, private and instant. Nothing you enter leaves your device.

Wages, salary, bonuses and other taxable income for the year.

Traditional 401(k), HSA, and similar amounts taken out of pay before tax.

For example the Child Tax Credit. Subtracted from your tax, down to zero.

How the calculator works

The US uses progressive tax brackets. You do not pay one rate on all your income. Each slice of your taxable income is taxed at the rate for its bracket, and only the part of your income inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate.

  1. Your pre-tax deductions are subtracted from your total income.
  2. The standard deduction (or your itemized total) is subtracted to get your taxable income.
  3. Each slice of taxable income is taxed at its bracket’s rate and the slices are added together.
  4. Any tax credits you enter are subtracted from the result.

Solved example

Single filer, $85,000 income, standard deduction

Taxable income: $85,000 − $16,100 = $68,900.

10% bracket: $12,400 × 10% = $1,240.

12% bracket: ($50,400 − $12,400) × 12% = $4,560.

22% bracket: ($68,900 − $50,400) × 22% = $4,070.

Total federal income tax: $9,870, an effective rate of about 11.6% of income.

2026 standard deduction

  • Single or married filing separately: $16,100
  • Married filing jointly: $32,200
  • Head of household: $24,150
  • Extra for age 65+ or blind: $2,050 (single or head of household) or $1,650 per person (married)
